F’IS Ensures Safe Elevator Rides In The Eiffel Tower

Schaeffler rolling bearing solutions and F’IS service solutions ensure greater safety and efficient maintenance in the Eiffel Tower

Herzogenrath, December 7, 2009. Schaeffler France has extended its long-standing cooperation with SETE (Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel) by providing additional services. Now Schaeffler does not only provide technical support in the selection of the most suitable rolling bearings but also carries out vibration analyses and mounting work for the company that operates the landmark of Paris.

The extension of the cooperation with F’IS was occasioned by an urgently needed replacement of bearings in the cabins of the hydraulic elevator in the western column. These bearings support a total weight of 20 tons, which means that they are permanently subjected to high loads. Moreover, the axial clearance of the old bearings was too large. It was therefore imperative to find an alternative solution quickly.

Schaeffler application engineering experts selected suitable FAG tapered roller bearings in close collaboration with SETE. These bearings meet all requirements regarding the radial and axial load ratings and can be integrated well into the system. An experienced FAG Industrial Services (F’IS) fitter provided on site support to the maintenance team that mounted the elevator cabin bearings, an assignment which took only one day.

When recently the upper pulleys of the elevator in the eastern column of the Eiffel Tower needed to be inspected, SETE contacted Schaeffler France again. Experienced F’IS experts carried out measurements with an offline vibration measuring device. Afterwards, SETE received a detailed condition report with recommendations regarding future maintenance measures.

At the end of the eighties, FAG provided support to the Eiffel Tower operator for the first time in an extensive project when all mechanical systems of the famous building were overhauled. At that time the bronze rings in the pulleys were replaced with FAG rolling bearing systems to modernize the elevators. That increased the elevators’ reliability significantly.

In 2002, Schaeffler was involved in the development and mounting of an INA gear ring that aligns the revolving floodlight at the tip of the tower.

The two companies are already planning more joint projects. What SETE particularly appreciates about the cooperation with the Schaeffler Group is the portfolio with which the rolling bearing manufacturer meets its customers’ increasing demand for innovative, high-quality products. This portfolio is complemented by the extensive range of product and service solutions for the maintenance and repair of rolling bearings offered by Schaeffler subsidiary FAG Industrial Services (F’IS). In this way F’IS helps its customers to reduce maintenance costs, optimize the elevators’ efficiency and avoid unscheduled shutdowns. F’IS takes responsibility for Schaeffler Group Industrial’s worldwide service business regarding the INA and FAG brands.
