Cost-Efficient Mounting of Large Bearings With Induction Heating

  • Induction heating by means of medium frequency technology
  • Unique Schaeffler service combines heating with mounting
  • Substantial cost savings: Schaeffler method reduces heating time by 50%
HERZOGENRATH, October 4, 2010. The Industrial Aftermarket of Schaeffler Group Industrial offers induction heating by means of medium-frequency technology – a special service for heating large rolling bearings and other circular steel parts in a simple and cost-effective manner. The medium-frequency induction heater used is fitted with flexible inductors that permit fast, safe and controlled heating. Customers, for example in the shipbuilding, steel and wind industries, benefit from a unique complete service package – consisting of innovative bearing heating and professional mounting support.

Medium-frequency technology is ideal for large components, whose heating with conventional methods requires a great organizational effort and considerable costs. Induction heating with the Schaeffler medium frequency induction heater allows a faster heat-up time than other methods as heat can be transferred directly to the workpiece and the process is largely automatic. In addition, the significantly shorter heating time (half the time needed compared to other methods) makes the new method extremely cost-effective. Typical applications include the heating of bearings and machine carriers as well as hard to access areas.

Schaeffler is the first and only company that offers a complete package consisting of bearing heating and mounting support. The package gives customers the certainty that the entire bearing replacement procedure – dismounting of the old bearing, heating and mounting of the new bearing – is carried out by experienced fitters. In this way the machines’ reliability is increased and the risk of failure reduced. The induction heater is easy to transport, so the service can be performed in all parts of the world, on bearings of any type and from any manufacturer.

The new heating method permits substantial cost savings in many applications. On board the pipe laying vessel Seven Navica in Norway, when Schaeffler mounting experts replaced a starboard bearing, medium frequency induction heating reduced the total replacement time by one day. In this way the operating company Subsea 7 was able to avoid failure and mounting costs in the order of about 120,000 euros.

More examples include customers in the wind and steel industries. The new complete package was ordered both by the steelmaker U.S. Steel for the replacement of a converter bearing (spherical roller bearing sized 950 x 1250 x 300 mm) in Slovakia and by a Dutch wind turbine manufacturer for the replacement of a turbine bearing that weighs more than a ton (tapered roller bearing sized 1200 x 1500 x 185.2 mm). In both cases, the new heating method saved 50 percent in time compared to conventional heating methods.

Schaeffler Group Industrial
