Successful Monitoring of Wind Power Plant with CM System from F’IS

Early Damage Detection at “Oldenbroker Feld” Through WiPro Online Condition Monitoring System – Avoidance of Serious Consequential Damage and Costs

HERZOGENRATH, August 31, 2004 – The investment in the FIS Condition Monitoring system has already paid off for the operators of the Oldenbroker Feld wind farm. Even during their staff training period, impending transmission damage was diagnosed with the help of the WiPro online condition monitoring system from FAG Industrial Services (F’IS). According to one of the employees involved, the following immediate replacement of the damaged components “avoided total transmission failure”.

So F’IS has provided impressive proof of the importance of condition-based maintenance in wind power plants in conjunction with a permanent monitoring system. Installed at the beginning of this year, its WiPro system monitors all eight wind turbines of the “Oldenbroker Feld” plant in the Weser Marsh district. Analysis of the extensive data is carried out by the operator’s technical managers who underwent special training by the F’IS personnel beforehand. In addition, the data can also be transferred to the F’IS service center at Herzogenrath so that access to the expertise of the F’IS maintenance specialists is available at any time.

Recently the Oldenbroker Feld employees proved that their training has borne fruit. They detected incipient damage on the generator, which was confirmed by the F’IS experts shortly afterwards. Here too it was possible to avoid serious consequential damage involving lengthy downtime with corresponding financial losses.

The WiPro condition monitoring system is one of only a few systems on the market that reliably detects such damage and thus meets the requirements for application in wind turbines specified by the Allianz Center for Technology (AZT). Thus Allianz confirms the suitability of the WiPro system for use in condition-oriented maintenance, on the basis of which insurers and wind turbine operators can agree on deviating terms regarding the costly revision clause.

“We have designed our WiPro system especially to meet the high demands in the wind power industry,” explains F’IS Managing Director Dr. Hans-Willi Keßler. “In addition to conventional automated condition monitoring, the system is able to compress data considerably without losing any damage-relevant information. So even larger plants can be monitored with ease.” Keller underlines that permanent condition monitoring can of course not prevent damage but helps to detect it at an early stage. In this way maintenance operations with sometimes complex logistical efforts involved can be planned well ahead and costly consequential damage is significantly reduced.
