Great Interest in Schaeffler Maintenance Workshop

Productivity and quality increases in the steel and aluminium industries thanks to innovative maintenance – event focuses on the latest rolling bearing technology and new servicesy

Herzogenrath, November 11, 2005 – A joint Schaeffler Group Industrial workshop on the subject of maintenance in the steel and aluminium industries from 2-3 November, 2005 in Wuppertal met with great interest. More than 60 participants learned from FAG Industrial Services (F’IS) maintenance experts and FAG application engineers as well as from committed plant operators how innovative maintenance measures can contribute to a significant increase in productivity and quality in their respective industries. The wide range of topics of the workshop covered the entire life cycle of rolling bearings, which are a key element of the production facilities used in the steel and aluminium industries.

In a practical example, the production manager of a hot wide strip mill showed that the installation of a F’IS online monitoring system had already paid off after significantly less than one year. Another highlight was the guest lecture by a professor from RWTH Aachen University of Technology on bearing design and condition monitoring of universal joint shafts in high performance rolling mill drives that dealt with this industry’s specific problems. Causes of failure and appropriate countermeasures were explained and discussed as well as the wide range of solutions offered by F’IS for preventing damage and for early detection of defects. Thanks to their many years’ expert know-how, the companies of the Schaeffler Group can support and advise their customers already with regard to rolling bearing design as well as the mounting, monitoring, dismounting and reconditioning – expert refurbishment - of rolling bearings.

Apart from the expositions on reconditioning – including another interesting user’s lecture on the subject, a tour of the FAG Wuppertal large-bearing production department and the reconditioning center that is located there made it clear that, especially with this type of bearing, reconditioning constitutes a sensible and more cost-effective alternative to the mounting of new large bearings.

F’IS managing director Dr. Bernd Geropp was very satisfied with the extremely positive response to the workshop. In spite of a tight time and topic schedule, participants also had sufficient opportunity to exchange information. Dr. Geropp said that this type of event will again be held, on a larger scale, next year. The next workshop on the subject of maintenance in the steel and aluminium industries will take place on 8-9 November, 2006.
