Online and offline monitoring of precision milling tools for early damage detection and planned maintenanceHerzogenrath, October 10, 2005 – The maintenance experts of FAG Industrial Services GmbH (F’IS) are now offering vibration monitoring of grinding spindles as a new service. These precision tools are used for milling and finishing metallic and non-metallic materials and are subjected to high stresses in the process. Vibration analysis enables experts to determine the condition of bearings and detect incipient damage at such an early stage that the necessary maintenance work can be planned in the most convenient manner, avoiding costly consequential damage. The F’IS technicians have already gained practical experience in the monitoring of grinding spindles at two different production sites. F’IS is offering the new service both as online monitoring with the condition monitoring system FAG DTECT X1 and as offline monitoring using the mobile, hand-held measuring instrument FAG Detector II. Online monitoring via permanently installed sensors is used for particularly critical spindles whose failure would cause, for example, high consequential costs resulting from production downtime. As the vibration signals from the spindle bearings are permanently measured, the system automatically alerts the maintenance team when invididually adjustable threshold values are exceeded. The online system also permits remote monitoring by the certified F’IS Service Center in Herzogenrath. The hand-held measuring instrument Detector II was developed for offline monitoring purposes and is used in this case in conjunction with the pertinent PC software for regularly measuring the vibration signals from mobile grinding spindles. By making reference measurements and storing the values for the mobile spindles in a database, experts have already successfully detected several cases of damage to machine elements. An early detection of increases in wear or incipient damage by a detailed analysis of the diagnosis parameters enables maintenance departments to plan maintenance activities in good time jointly with the production department. This, the monitoring experts in Herzogenrath point out, constitutes a considerable savings potential for companies taking this precautionary measure.
