Installation of F’IS condition monitoring systems at another two cement mills – intensive training of new employees to permit independent analyses
Herzogenrath, May 24, 2006 – In view of the documented cost savings due to condition monitoring, Spenner Zement GmbH & Co. KG in Erwitte is having another two cement mills (tube mills) equipped with online condition monitoring systems provided by FAG Industrial Services GmbH (F’IS). After one mill had to be shut down for several weeks because of gear damage, Spenner had begun to have the condition of its main gear and reduction gear permanently monitored by an FAG DTECT X1 system. A few months after its installation, it detected a tooth damage in one gear, which was confirmed by Spenner employees after a visual inspection. As the damage was detected at such an early stage, the customer was able to avoid consequential damage and the resulting high cost of repair and production loss. Moreover, the gear could be replaced during a scheduled shutdown of the mill.
In view of this positive experience, another two tube mills in Erwitte are now being monitored by DTECT X1 systems with five sensors each. Three of them measure vibrations for monitoring the rolling bearings and the gear teeth, the other two do the same at the reduction gear for monitoring bearings, girth gear and pinion. As with the first monitoring system, all data are transmitted directly to the customer’s control station, automatically triggering an alarm if any deviations from the standard values are detected. After initial support by the vibration and analysis experts from Herzogenrath and intensive training by the F’IS team, select Spenner employees are now able to operate the condition monitoring system and to analyze the data themselves. Additional employees of the Erwitte family business are now being trained to operate the new DTECT X1 systems and analyze the data. Moreover, if the first signs of complex problems are detected, data can be sent directly to the F’IS expert team by e-mail for in-depth analysis in order to obtain suggestions regarding damage repair or direct help provided by fitters.
One decisive advantage of online condition monitoring by means of the DTECT X1 system is the fact that the transmitted data enable the experts not only to detect the actual problem but also to pinpoint the damaged component. For example, the type of damage provides valuable clues regarding the necessary reaction time as different types of damage progress at different speeds. For maintenance planning this means that, thanks to early detection, not only the required special replacement parts can be procured in time but also replacement can be effected during the regular maintenance intervals.
