Innovative Solutions For More Safety And Cost Efficiency In The Paper Industry

SCHWEINFURT/WIESBADEN, June 27, 2011. At this year’s Zellcheming-Expo, the Schaeffler Group will present a number of products and services for machines and plants in the paper industry. The central meeting point for the pulp and paper industry will take place from 28-30 June 2011 in the Rhein-Main-Hallen in Wiesbaden. Exhibits will include solutions for reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by extending the life cycles of machines and plants. Their efficiency is expressed in significantly longer running times and shorter downtime periods. Amongst the highlights showcased at the Schaeffler booth will be the new online vibration measuring system FAG SmartCheck, which makes online monitoring of “smaller” units cost-efficient. Other exhibits will include extremely high-performance E1 spherical roller thrust bearings in X-Life quality and self-aligning cylindrical roller bearings for the dryer section of paper machines. Also, Schaeffler will present a novel, patented method for mounting rolling bearings with a tapered bore.

FAG SmartCheck - Easy, intelligent, reliable
FAG SmartCheck is a new, extremely efficient measuring system for the real time monitoring of machines and plants. Its excellent price-performance ratio makes online monitoring of smaller, redundant or non-redundant units cost-efficient. Examples of such smaller units include electric motors, pumps, compressors, ventilators, fans and gears. FAG SmartCheck features a number of novel, innovative technologies and trend setting functions, making a valuable contribution to the optimization of processes and thus the reduction of life cycle cost.
The offer is supplemented by a unique range of FAG SmartCheck related services - from initial training seminars to support during the introduction stage and experts’ support in diagnosis-related questions to customized service agreements that also include remote monitoring.

High performance through X-Life quality
Spherical roller thrust bearings are used in applications where very high axial loads have to be accommodated and / or misalignments of the bearing seats must be compensated for. E1 spherical roller thrust bearings of X-Life quality are designed for just these conditions. They can be used even with the most demanding load/speed combinations, e.g. in high speed refiners. For plant operators, this results in higher levels of machine availability, greater cost-efficiency and lower operating costs through reduced power consumption. Machine designers benefit from a higher performance in the same size or more cost-efficient solutions made possible by downsizing.

Compensation of axial length variations
Self aligning cylindrical roller bearings (SACR) are used in the drying cylinders/m.g. cylinders and guide rolls of paper machines. The bearing smoothly compensates for great axial length variations of the drying cylinder between its inner ring raceway and rollers. The spherical outer ring and the plain spherical bearing outer ring permit the bearing to align as required. The lubricant is fed directly into the bearing through the middle of the outer ring, resulting in a symmetric temperature distribution within the bearing. Bearings of other types - for example spherical roller bearings - can be replaced with self-aligning cylindrical roller bearings without requiring any significant modification of the housing. Self-aligning cylindrical roller bearings, combined with a plummer block housing which is bolted securely to the machine frame, have a favourable vibration behaviour, which is a prerequisite for higher speeds.

New mounting method for rolling bearings with a tapered bore
The Schaeffler Group mounting experts have developed a new method that makes the mounting of rolling bearings with a tapered bore easier. This method permits fitters to push rolling bearings with a tapered bore onto a shaft in a simple yet efficient manner. The principle: the displacement distance required for mounting a particular bearing is determined by measuring the oil volume. The fitter then pushes the bearing onto the shaft with the help of a pump and the required number of strokes. This is not only very easy but also extremely safe. Moreover, the new method reduces the logistical effort as less equipment is required. Only a hydraulic nut and the new, modified FAG pump are needed. The Schaeffler portfolio also includes a special hydraulic unit for mounting large to medium-sized bearings or for the frequent mounting of bearings. This hydraulic unit controls and measures the amount of oil for the mounting process automatically.
