Affordable continuous vibration and temperature monitoring for constant-speed machinery – New “early warning system” protects against unexpected shutdowns

Herzogenrath, Germany, February 12, 2003 – With Easy Check, FAG subsidiary F’IS – FAG Industrial Services GmbH – has developed a new and extremely affordable monitoring instrument for continuous measurement of vibration and temperature. By providing early indication of damage, this instrument helps to avoid unexpected plant shutdowns. Easy Check is simple to install and provides continuous monitoring of constant-speed machinery like electric motors, pumps and fans. Once applied to the machine to be monitored, the “early warning system” from this Herzogenrath-based service organization triggers an immediate alarm should imbalances, alignment errors or damage to antifriction bearings manifest itself in the form of vibration or temperature variances. The baseline parameters determined when the new system is put into operation serve as relative monitoring reference values. An alarm is triggered if one of the measured values exceeds the baseline parameter by a configurable level.

Conventional systems for continuous vibration monitoring that provide early indication of damage to machinery continue to be very costly and are typically only employed in machinery in which a shutdown would result in extremely high costs (e.g. papermaking machinery), in which damage could quickly propagate (e.g. high-speed machine tools) or in which damage would pose a risk to people (e.g. monitoring for emergency turbine shutdown). While the alternative of using portable measurement systems to monitor plants and machinery can be performed by in-house personnel after a brief period of training, only an experienced vibration expert can make a reliable diagnosis on the basis of the values that have been determined. Short monitoring intervals are required in order to be able to identify damage early on, and that in turn is a time-consuming and costly process.

The FAG Easy Check vibration and temperature monitor now offers a new and unrivalled affordable alternative for continuous employment on constant-speed machinery. Easy Check can be simply bolted to the machine or attached with a magnetic base, without the need for any further wiring. The battery-operated system measures the parameters at one-minute intervals and provides continuous visualization of the operating status by means of an LED display.

Beginning in late February 2003, Easy Check will be available at distributors for a retail price of € 199. F’IS GmbH will be demonstrating Easy Check at this year’s Hanover Industrial Fair (April 7 – 12) at its Booth A41 in Hall 22.
