Herzogenrath/Schweinfurt, May, 7th 2004 – As wheelset bearings are subjected to extreme loads, they are among the most important safety-relevant components incorporated in rail vehicles. For this reason, the maintenance of these bearings demands the ultimate expertise and care.

With the opening of a bearing reconditioning center in Schweinfurt, the reconditioning team of FAG Industrial Services (F’IS) is now in a position to offer operators of all types of rail vehicles the safe and proper dismounting, cleaning and refurbishment of bearings. This new service offering is not only restricted to the products from FAG Kugelfischer AG, the world’s leading manufacturer of rail vehicle bearings, but is also available for products from other suppliers.

 

The state-of-the-art center in Schweinfurt is equipped with special tools for bearing dismounting and mounting as well as cleaning installations, ensuring the optimum realization of this qualified service. Its core is a twin-chamber washing facility that operates according to the spraying method. After dismounting and the removal of coarse grease residues, the bearing parts are pressure cleaned with the washing agent. The continuous rotation of the parts ensures a particularly thorough cleaning procedure.

 

After cleaning and rinsing, the outer and inner rings as well as the rolling elements and adjacent parts undergo thorough visual examination. Damaged parts are exchanged in the process. The service includes the measurement and adjustment of the axial clearance in TAROL bearings as well as the polishing of bore, outside diameter and adjacent parts. After regreasing and remounting, the bearings are conserved and packed for return transport. The marking of each individual bearing prior to dismounting ensures that the customer can obtain a bearing-related documentation of all maintenance operations as an additional plus, should the need arise.

One important aspect for the Schweinfurt reconditioning experts is the fact that the contaminated rinsing agent is cleaned in an integrated second tank facility and redirected to the process afterwards. This means that the new high-performance cleaning unit is also extremely environmentally friendly. The facility is suited for cylindrical and tapered roller bearings of widths up to 180 mm maximum and outside diameters of 280 mm maximum.
