INA-Schaeffler, FAG Kugelfischer and F’IS at the 2004 MinExpo

Ready for Use under Extremely Harsh Conditions

LAS VEGAS/HERZOGENAURACH/SCHWEINFURT, September 28, 2004. -  “Competence in Mining and Processing” is the motto INA-Schaeffler KG and FAG Kugelfischer AG use to present new technical concepts, bearings and service solutions for the worldwide mining industry. The two companies are members of the Schaeffler Group and leading manufacturers of rolling bearings worldwide.

The products and services shown belong the INA’s and FAG’s shared “Heavy Industries” sector management and include motorized wheel bearings and cylindrical roller bearings with solid brass disk cages (LSL) for extremely heavy loads. Exhibits also focus on E1 spherical roller bearings and ELGES large spherical plain bearings that are part of INA’s and FAG’s new premium class, “X-life.” X-life is the new quality seal of approval for products offering top performance, service life and customer benefits.

Vibration monitors (FAG Detector II) and condition monitoring products (FAG Easy Check online) supplied by FAG Industrial Services (F’IS) complement the companies’ product range. They help operators plan maintenance actions well ahead and avoid expensive, unplanned machine downtimes. The “Screen Saver” vibration measuring system will be presented to the public for the first time. Designed for monitoring vibrating screens, it uses special high-pass filters to distinguish between process vibration and vibration caused by defective components (transmission, bearings, loose parts). The data can be accessed offline or transmitted online through various communication channels. Thus the “FAG Screen Saver” enables the operator to detect damage at an early stage.

Another specialty exhibited at the booth is the bearing design for the “Quadropol roller mill” manufactured by Polysius AG. As a development partner, FAG has been involved in this revolutionary mill concept from the start. The special feature of this particularly easy-maintenance, long-life roller mill concept by Polysius AG is the bearing arrangement outside the grinding chamber. This concept requires strong tilting of the shaft axis of up to two degrees, with corresponding effects on the bearing. FAG found the solution to these requirements to be a special spherical roller bearing in the locating and non-locating bearing position in order to ensure a reliable axial displacement of the non-locating bearing. The outer ring, which has to support high loads in the process, was provided with a special coating. FAG test results show practically no wear. FAG engineers had to calculate no less than 56 collective loads with the help of “Bearinx” – and they were successful.

ELGOGLIDE – An extraordinary bearing generation

Depending on the particular application, maintenance-free ELGES large-size spherical plain bearings with a sliding layer of PTFE fabric represent an interesting alternative to rolling bearing arrangements. These plain bearings, known under their brand name “ELGOGLIDE“, stand out because they require zero maintenance, have a long service life and an extremely high load carrying capacity. The support body consists of hardened or unhardened steel. The mixed fabric of PTFE, support fiber, synthetic resin adhesive and filling material is applied in a special thermodynamic process developed by INA. This coating is particularly suitable for alternating loads (pdyn = 300N/mm² and pstat = 500 N/mm²) and offers excellent dry sliding properties. It is also absolutely humidity-resistant. ELGOGLIDE products represent the top performance class among plain bearings in competition. This is why these spherical plain bearings have received the “X-life seal of approval.”

These plain bearings, available for instance as large radial spherical plain bearings with bore dimensions of up to 1000 millimeters, are mainly used in open-cast mining in stackers of bucket wheel excavators as well as in coal and cement mills.

F’IS – Services for the customer

But the focus was not only on sophisticated rolling bearing designs and bearing arrangement concepts. More than ever, application support, mounting, monitoring and maintenance played a major role. INA and FAG offer a complete package in cooperation with FAG Industrial Services (F’IS). In addition to rolling bearing reconditioning (for outside diameters up to 4250 millimeters) and training on their correct mounting, F’IS offers manufacturer-independent products such as Easy Check, Detector II or the new Bearing Analyser 3 for monitoring and early detection of bearing damage. And F’IS Condition Monitoring is a unique service for the online monitoring of facilities in cement factories, bucket wheel excavators or paper machines that diagnoses any potential malfunction immediately.

The main purpose is to save the customer maintenance costs, prevent unscheduled downtimes and increase machine availability. All of these factors result in enhanced economic efficiency.

The Schaeffler Group

has a total of 57,000 employees in 180 locations worldwide and group sales of approximately 7 billion euros (2003 business year) and is one of the leading rolling bearing manufacturers and automotive suppliers worldwide. The group of companies includes the INA Group with headquarters in Herzogenaurach, the FAG Group based in Schweinfurt and the LuK Group headquartered in Bühl.

FAG Industrial Services GmbH (F’IS)

Since the beginning of 2001, FAG Kugelfischer AG, a member of the Schaeffler Group, has been focusing its service business in FAG Industrial Services GmbH (F’IS), headquartered at Herzogenrath near Aachen. As an independent company, F’IS offers its maintenance services and service products on a manufacturer-neutral basis, so helping customers to save maintenance costs, optimize machine availability and avoid unexpected machine downtime.
