Early Fault Detection with Online Condition Monitoring System Helps Avoid Unplanned Downtime and High Failure Costs
HERZOGENRATH, January 18, 2005. Cascades Arnsberg GmbH, the German subsidiary of Cascades Inc., Canada, manufactures some 185,000 tons of coated and uncoated carton board per year, exclusively from waste paper. As the downtime of machines and components incurs extremely high costs particularly in paper and carton board production, the Arnsberg mill deploys the FAG VibroCheck online condition monitoring system for continuous surveillance of critical carton machine bearings and gears and relies on the services rendered by FAG Industrial Services GmbH (F’IS). Monitoring the bearings in the 150-ton Yankee dryer is a particular challenge due to its low speeds (25 rpm). Here the sensors of the VibroCheck system, installed at a total of 130 measurement points, ensure that faults are detected early on so that unplanned downtime can be avoided.
The Arnsberg carton board specialists became fully aware of the great benefits of continuous online monitoring when the VibroCheck system detected damage on the outer ring of a drive end bearing supporting the Yankee dryer. The F’IS fitters replaced the bearing at short notice in the course of a planned shutdown and the carton machine resumed operation according to schedule. “It was simply fantastic how quickly the F’IS experts were available on site and how well they cooperated with our maintenance staff,” rejoices Horst Exner, Maintenance Engineer Mechanics and responsible for the VibroCheck deployment at Cascades in Arnsberg. According to the maintenance specialist, the early fault detection and quick response of the Herzogenrath engineers did not only avoid high failure costs but also possible and costly consequential damage.
The VibroCheck online condition monitoring system from FAG Industrial Services GmbH is used for the continuous surveillance of vital machine parts such as rolling bearings and gears. The main field of application embraces machines where a huge number of measurement points have to be monitored. In addition to paper and carton factories, these also include rolling mills and power stations. VibroCheck offers tools that enable the remote monitoring of plants. Data transfer between plant and diagnostic center is based on TCP/IP protocols.
